Mexican president urges calm after cartel leader El Mencho killed in military operation
The killing of El Mencho triggered immediate cartel backlash across multiple states, with roadblocks, burning vehicles, and clashes reported
MEXICO CITY, Mexico (MNTV) – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has moved to reassure the nation following the killing of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” declaring “absolute coordination” with all state governments amid widespread cartel retaliation.
“There is absolute coordination with the governments of all states; we must remain informed and calm,” Sheinbaum posted on social media, adding that “activities are proceeding normally throughout most of the country.”
The Ministry of Defense confirmed that Special Forces conducted the operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, with the original intention of apprehending Oseguera. Military personnel came under attack and responded in self-defense, resulting in four cartel members killed at the scene and three others fatally wounded during air evacuation to Mexico City. In total, seven cartel members died in the operation, including the notorious boss.
“Among the latter is Ruben ‘N’ (alias Mencho); however, the corresponding authorities will be in charge of the forensic activities to confirm his identification,” the ministry stated. Two additional cartel members were arrested, and authorities seized armored vehicles and weapons, including rocket launchers capable of shooting down aircraft.
The killing of El Mencho triggered immediate cartel backlash across multiple states, with roadblocks, burning vehicles, and armed clashes reported. Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro issued a red alert and canceled in-person classes for Monday.
Sheinbaum acknowledged the unrest, noting the Defense Ministry had reported “various blockades and other reactions” following the federal operation, while reaffirming that her administration works “every day for peace, security, justice, and the well-being of Mexico.”
