Maldivian teen wins bronze at Malaysia’s Taekwondo Championship
Yunus bin Mohamed Quraishi overcomes injury to secure third place among 18 contenders
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — Young Maldivian taekwondo athlete Yunus bin Mohamed Quraishi has earned a bronze medal at the 2nd Hana Open & Dato Ali Maju Taekwondo Championship 2025, held from May 30 to June 1 at Titiwangsa Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Hana Open is Malaysia’s largest club-level taekwondo competition, drawing approximately 2,000 athletes from various regions. Yunus competed in the 12–14 age category, which saw 18 young athletes vying for the title.
According to The Edition, Yunus delivered a strong performance, winning three consecutive matches to reach the semi-finals. Despite sustaining a shoulder injury during the semi-final bout, he managed to win the first round. However, the injury hampered his performance in subsequent rounds, and he concluded the tournament in third place
This achievement adds to Yunus’s growing list of accolades. In July 2023, he clinched the gold medal at the Intra Club Kirgi Taekwondo Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Yunus’s coaches and supporters praised his resilience and sportsmanship, noting that his determination to continue competing despite the injury reflects a high level of commitment and discipline for his age.
