Maldives unveils digital reform roadmap at national tech summit
3-day event outlines plans for digitizing public services, strengthening cybersecurity, and building a connected governance system.
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — The Maldives concluded its national digital summit on Sunday with the unveiling of a comprehensive roadmap to modernize public services and expand digital infrastructure.
The “Maldives 2.0” Digital Transformation Summit brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and international experts for three days of discussions on how to transition the country toward a more connected and efficient governance model.
According to state media, the event culminated in the presentation of a National Digital Declaration to President Mohamed Muizzu. The document consolidates input from various stakeholders and outlines strategic goals for digital transformation, including improved public service delivery and the integration of secure technologies across government institutions.
The declaration was presented to President Muizzu by Homeland Security and Technology Minister Ali Ihusaan. Representatives from Estonia, known for its digital governance model, also participated in the summit.
Under the Maldives 2.0 initiative, the government aims to implement wide-ranging reforms over the next three years. Key objectives include establishing a sovereign cloud for secure data storage, creating a standardized digital ID system for seamless online transactions, and developing a data exchange platform to facilitate real-time communication between public agencies.
Cybersecurity emerged as a central focus of the summit, with discussions highlighting the need for stronger protections of national digital infrastructure. Officials also emphasized citizen-centered service delivery and proposed steps to improve accessibility through unified digital platforms.
Efforts to develop a skilled domestic workforce and support local ICT businesses were also part of the agenda. Officials described the initiative as not only a path to administrative efficiency but also a potential driver of economic innovation.
The summit featured three keynote speeches, ten policy papers, and a special panel on international cooperation. Participants called for future editions of the summit to include greater international collaboration, especially with countries experienced in digital governance.
President Muizzu has since endorsed making the Maldives 2.0 summit an annual event to track progress and maintain momentum on the reform agenda.
