Maldives to host Carrom World Cup for second time
The island nation will stage the 2025 tournament, following strong showings by its players on the international stage
MALÉ, Maldives (MNTV) — The Maldives has been confirmed as host of the 2025 Carrom World Cup, with the tournament’s official logo unveiled during a ceremony on Tuesday attended by government officials, sports leaders, and members of the carrom community.
This marks the second time the island nation will stage the event, having first hosted the World Cup in 2014. Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu officiated the launch, calling it the start of preparations for what is expected to be one of the year’s biggest international gatherings for the game.
The announcement comes on the back of strong international performances by Maldivian players. At the 2024 Carrom World Cup in California, both Maldivian men’s and women’s teams advanced to the semi-finals, winning bronze medals after defeats to Sri Lanka.
Maldivian athletes also excelled at the Asian Carrom Championship in Malé last year. Doubles pair Ismail Azmeen and Hassan Nazim claimed silver, while the men’s team secured silver in the team category and the women’s team added a bronze.
Several players reached the quarterfinals in singles competitions, underscoring the country’s growing competitiveness in the sport.
Officials say hosting the World Cup again will not only strengthen the Maldives’ profile in international carrom but also inspire local players and boost the sport’s popularity at home.
For the island nation, known globally for its tourism industry, the event also offers another opportunity to showcase itself as a venue for international sporting events.
