Maldives launches global brand to promote sustainable fish exports
“From Maldives” brand unveiled in London as government seeks global markets for eco-friendly, high-quality seafood
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — The Maldives has launched a new global brand aimed at boosting its fish exports, positioning the Indian Ocean archipelago as a premium source of sustainably caught seafood.
President Mohamed Muizzu introduced the brand — titled “From Maldives” — during a business forum in London on Thursday, as part of a broader push to attract foreign buyers and investment into the country’s fisheries sector.
The announcement came during the Maldives–UK Business Forum, organized by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. According to officials, the branding is part of a wider effort to market Maldivian seafood products as eco-certified and high-quality, at a time when climate challenges and overfishing are reshaping global seafood demand.
As reported by state officials, the new brand emphasizes traceability, traditional pole-and-line fishing methods, and cleaner processing. The visual identity draws from local marine culture and is intended to signal compliance with international sustainability standards.
The initiative is led by a newly formed government-owned company, the Maldives Fisheries and Ocean Resources Marketing and Promotion Corporation, established under Muizzu’s administration to expand the country’s presence in international seafood markets.
Alongside the branding launch, Maldivian officials used the London forum to pitch investment opportunities across five sectors: fisheries, tourism infrastructure, renewable energy, digital services, and creative industries. The government also promoted legal changes — including updates to the Foreign Investment Act and the reactivation of Special Economic Zones — aimed at attracting international capital.
Business leaders from the UK and other countries attended the forum, which included a panel titled “Investing in the Future: A Dialogue on Maldives Economic Vision.” Discussions focused on sustainable fishing, tourism, waste management, and energy transitions.
In a bid to strengthen trade ties, the Maldives also signed a memorandum of understanding with the West London Chambers of Commerce to facilitate business cooperation.
