Madinah’s King Faisal Hospital conducts first stem cell transplant
Pioneering procedure treats acute myeloid leukemia, bringing advanced bone marrow replacement therapy closer to patients and families in Saudi Arabia
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (MNTV) — King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Madinah has successfully performed its first allogeneic stem cell transplant on a patient suffering from acute myeloid leukemia, marking a major milestone in advanced medical care within the region.
According to Arab News, hospital officials said the achievement ensures that patients with complex blood disorders in Madinah and nearby areas can now access life-saving, highly specialized treatments without having to travel far from their families.
The groundbreaking procedure was made possible through close collaboration among the hospital’s clinical, nursing, and laboratory departments, which worked jointly from the planning stages to manage the complexity of the treatment.
“This success reflects the integrated efforts of multidisciplinary teams who ensured patient stability and a safe recovery after the transplant,” the hospital said in a statement.
Stem cell transplantation, considered one of the most advanced medical procedures worldwide, involves replacing diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells from a matched donor, offering renewed chances of survival for patients battling leukemia, bone marrow failure, and severe immune system disorders.
Currently, KFSHRC Madinah operates with 400 beds and delivers specialized care across multiple disciplines, including pediatric and adult oncology, ophthalmology, and obstetrics and gynecology.
The institution also holds 14 training accreditations in medical and nursing specialties and has been recognized internationally, ranking first in the Middle East and Africa and 15th globally among the world’s top 250 academic medical centers in 2025
