Kuwait, China seal contract for strategic port project
Mina Mubarak Al-Kabeer port agreement advances Kuwait Vision goals, boosts trade connectivity, logistics capacity, and bilateral cooperation
KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait (MNTV) – Kuwait and China have signed an engineering, supply, and construction contract to advance the Mina Mubarak Al-Kabeer port project on Boubyan Island, marking a major milestone in bilateral infrastructure cooperation.
The signing ceremony was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, with the agreement inked by Public Works Minister Dr. Nora Al-Mashaan and Chen Zhong, Deputy Chairman of the China Communications Construction Company.
Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister highlighted the depth of Kuwait–China relations, describing them as rooted in mutual trust, political respect, and intersecting economic interests.
He said the project reflects the shared strategic vision of both countries’ leaderships and strengthens cooperation toward a long-term partnership.
The Mina Mubarak Al-Kabeer port is considered a cornerstone of Kuwait’s economic development strategy, aimed at enhancing the country’s role in regional and global trade and integrating Kuwait more deeply into international supply chains.
Officials say the project will support diversification of the national economy, raise state revenues, and create high-quality employment opportunities.
Minister Al-Mashaan said the agreement represents a key step in translating existing bilateral accords into tangible outcomes, adding that the port will serve as a major logistics and services hub while modernizing Kuwait’s maritime transport infrastructure.
China’s Acting Charge d’Affaires Lie Xiang described the project as part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative, while Chen Zhong said the port marks the first major achievement under the joint development strategy, pledging adherence to international standards in its execution.
