Kazakhstan to train 1 million citizens in AI over next five years
Government launches nationwide initiative to integrate AI education into schools, universities, and civil services through Astana Hub
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — Kazakhstan plans to train one million citizens in artificial intelligence over the next five years as part of a sweeping national strategy to position itself as a regional technology leader, the government announced.
The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry will lead the initiative, in partnership with the Ministries of Science, Higher Education, and Enlightenment, along with the state-backed tech ecosystem Astana Hub. Training will target 500,000 school students, 300,000 university students, 90,000 civil servants, and 80,000 business professionals, officials said.
“AI is not just technology, but a new type of literacy for the 21st century,” said Daniya Akhmetova, Executive Director of Astana Hub, as quoted by Kazinform. “The goal is to form a generation ready to create and use technologies — not just consume them.”
Akhmetova added that the national initiative, titled AI Movement – Artificial Intelligence for All, aims to make AI education accessible to every Kazakhstani, regardless of age, profession, or location.
According to Silk Way TV, the upcoming International Artificial Intelligence Center — headquartered in the eight-story Alem.AI building — will play a central role in the initiative. It will host educational programs for students, AI research labs, startup accelerators, and venues for forums and hackathons. The sixth floor will serve as an AI campus and startup incubation zone, while the seventh floor will house research and development centers and AI laboratories.
“This initiative focuses on training competitive AI specialists through international, instructor-less learning models,” said Gizzat Baitursynov, Chairman of the Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Development Committee at the Ministry.
A draft law On Artificial Intelligence is currently under review in Parliament, and a national AI strategy is in development as Kazakhstan builds a legal and institutional framework to support its tech ambitions.
