Kazakhstan to host 2025 World Cadet Chess Championships
Almaty to welcome more than 800 young players from 84 nations as Kazakhstan cements its rise in global chess scene
ALMATY, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — More than 800 young players from around the world will gather in Kazakhstan this autumn for the FIDE World Cadet Chess Championships, one of the sport’s premier youth tournaments. The competition runs from September 18 to October 1 at the Baluan Sholaq Arena in Almaty.
According to the state-run Kazinform News Agency, the event will feature Open and Girls categories across the under-8, under-10 and under-12 age groups. Delegations from 84 countries are expected, with India, China, and the United States sending some of the largest teams. As host nation, Kazakhstan will be represented by around 200 players.
The tournament comes at a time when Kazakhstan has been climbing the global chess ladder. At the 2024 edition of the World Cadet Championships, Kazakh players topped the medal table with two golds and a silver.
The country has also celebrated individual success stories, including 11-year-old prodigy Ayan Asylbek, who captured first place at the Fujairah chess festival earlier this year.
Organizers say hosting the cadet championships reflects Kazakhstan’s ambition to become a regional hub for international chess.
In recent years, Almaty and Astana have hosted a string of major tournaments, while the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, known as KazChess, has expanded youth training programs and invested in school-level competitions.
The 2025 cadet event is expected to boost both the country’s sporting profile and its tourism sector, drawing hundreds of young players, coaches, and families from across the globe. The opening ceremony will be held on September 19, followed by nearly two weeks of competition before the closing ceremony on September 30.
