Kazakhstan launches nationwide Starlink service
Satellite internet expands from school pilot to nationwide rollout under deal ensuring compliance with Kazakhstan’s laws
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service has officially launched nationwide in Kazakhstan, a move expected to significantly narrow the country’s digital divide.
Residents, businesses, and public institutions can now legally purchase and activate Starlink terminals, bringing high-speed connectivity to some of the most remote corners of the country.
Kazakhstan’s engagement with Starlink began in late 2023, when the system was introduced on a pilot basis to connect rural schools to fast broadband. By mid-2024, more than 1,700 schools were online under the national “Accessible Internet” program.
The pilot demonstrated the potential of low-Earth-orbit satellites to overcome the limitations of terrestrial infrastructure in a vast nation with widely dispersed communities.
A formal agreement between the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry and Starlink, signed on June 12, 2025, cleared the way for public access.
The deal requires Starlink to fully comply with Kazakhstan’s telecommunications and information security laws, a condition that had previously restricted the service to the education sector.
For areas beyond the reach of fiber-optic cables or mobile towers — from mountain settlements to remote industrial sites — Starlink offers a critical alternative. Its satellite network delivers high-speed, low-latency internet without relying on ground-based infrastructure, opening opportunities for rural education, telemedicine, industry, and emergency services.
Kazakh officials have called the launch a milestone for national connectivity. “Until today, Starlink operated in Kazakhstan in pilot mode, providing internet only in schools. Now we have reached an agreement: the company agreed to comply with all our legislative requirements … our citizens will be able to officially and legally connect to satellite internet,” said Minister Zhaslan Madiyev in June.
Starlink confirmed the expansion on its official X account, stating: “Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency internet is now available in Kazakhstan!”
