Kazakh religious authority issues fatwa on deepfakes
Kazakhstan's top Muslim body has issued a religious ruling addressing the use of deepfake technology, warning against its misuse
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — Kazakhstan’s top Muslim body has issued a religious ruling addressing the use of deepfake technology, warning that its misuse to spread falsehoods and deceive the public violates Islamic law.
The Spiritual Administration of Kazakhstan’s Muslims said deepfakes — a form of artificial intelligence that can manipulate video and audio — are not inherently forbidden, but their use must adhere to principles of justice, morality and Islamic law.
The technology can alter a person’s voice or facial expressions, or falsely depict someone as saying or doing something that never occurred.
Islam does not oppose scientific or technological advancement, the administration said, provided such innovations are used ethically and responsibly.
“Islamic law prohibits the dissemination of false information and the deception of people by making a person say words they did not actually say or perform actions they did not commit,” the administration’s religious experts said.
