Judge rules Rumeysa Ozturk must be released
A federal judge has ordered the immediate release of Rumeysa Ozturk.
She is the Tufts University Ph.D. student from Turkey who was detained by masked federal agents in March during Ramadan.
The video of her arrest went viral, drawing outrage across the country amid a crackdown on immigrants and pro-Palestine activists by the Trump administration.
U.S. District Judge William Sessions III ruled that Ozturk was unlawfully detained for little more than authoring an op-ed critical of Israel in her school newspaper.
He said, “Her continued detention cannot stand.”
Sessions III described her detention as an apparent violation of her free speech rights and noted that Ozturk had made significant claims of due process violations.
The order only applies to Ozturk’s immediate confinement.
The Trump administration’s efforts to deport her will continue in immigration court.
