Jordan qualify for FIFA World Cup for the first time after dominant win over Oman
Ali Olwan’s hat-trick powers Jordan past Oman 3–0, while South Korea’s win over Iraq guarantees Kingdom’s automatic place in 2026 finals
AMMAN, Jordan (MNTV) — Jordan has officially qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history, securing a historic place at the 2026 tournament after a decisive 3–0 away victory over Oman.
The Kingdom entered the night knowing that only a win, plus favorable results elsewhere, could confirm their direct qualification from Group B.
They delivered on both fronts. A clinical performance at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat saw forward Ali Olwan steal the spotlight with a stunning hat-trick, while news from Basra later confirmed Jordan’s mathematical progression.
Olwan opened the scoring from the penalty spot during first-half stoppage time, rewarding Jordan’s first-half dominance.
Early in the second half, he doubled the lead by finishing off a fast-paced counterattack initiated by Yazan Al-Naimat. His third goal — a composed finish after being set up by Musa Al-Taamari — sealed the result and silenced the home crowd.
Led by coach Jamal Sellami, Jordan combined disciplined defense with quick transitions, exploiting Oman’s vulnerabilities and controlling the match from start to finish. The tactical setup proved decisive, as Jordan’s front line converted chances with ruthless precision.
Meanwhile, in Iraq, South Korea capitalized on an early red card for Iraqi midfielder Ali Hamadi in the 26th minute to take control of their fixture.
Second-half goals from Kim Jin and Oh Hyeon sealed a 2–0 win for the Koreans, eliminating Iraq from contention and securing Jordan’s second-place finish in the group.
The results mean Jordan cannot be overtaken in the standings heading into their final group match against Iraq in Amman on June 10, turning the fixture into a celebration rather than a decider.
Jordan finishes the penultimate round with 16 points, an unassailable lead over Iraq, and a place on football’s grandest stage — a landmark achievement for a team that has narrowly missed out on previous World Cup campaigns.
The historic qualification is seen as a defining moment for Jordanian football, marking the culmination of years of investment, rebuilding, and belief. With the dream now realized, the focus shifts to preparing for the global stage in 2026.
