Israeli drone strike kills three in Lebanon
Lebanon reports civilian deaths as Israel targets Hezbollah operatives amid ceasefire and ongoing disarmament efforts
BEIRUT, Lebanon (MNTV) — Three people were killed in an air strike near Sidon on Monday, Lebanese state media reported, as Israel said it targeted Hezbollah operatives ahead of a deadline for the group’s disarmament in the south.
The strike, carried out by an Israeli drone approximately 10 kilometers from the southern coastal city, hit a vehicle and resulted in the deaths of all occupants, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency.
Israel has maintained regular strikes on Lebanon, claiming its targets are Hezbollah members, despite a November 2024 ceasefire aimed at ending over a year of hostilities with the resistance group, which Israel accuses of rearming.
Under significant U.S. pressure and concerns over expanded Israeli operations, Lebanon has bowed to disarm Hezbollah, beginning with the southern regions.
The Lebanese army intends to complete disarmament south of the Litani River, roughly 30 kilometers from the Israeli border, by the end of the year.
The latest strike occurred despite renewed talks between Lebanese and Israeli civilian representatives under the ceasefire monitoring committee, marking the second meeting after decades of attacks by Israeli forces.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said the discussions aim to “stop hostilities, secure Israel’s withdrawal, return prisoners, and allow southern residents to return to their villages,” while noting that Lebanon is awaiting constructive steps from Israel.
Since the ceasefire, more than 340 people have reportedly been killed by Israeli fire in Lebanon, according to news agencies’ counts based on health ministry reports.
The day before, Israeli strikes near the border killed one person and injured another. Israeli forces continue to maintain positions in five strategically significant areas of southern Lebanon.
