Israel, Egypt coordinate reopening of Rafah border crossing
Preparations underway to resume controlled movement of people between Gaza and Egypt; humanitarian aid continues via Kerem Shalom
TEL AVIV, Israel (MNTV) — Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) announced on Thursday that preparations are ongoing with Egypt to reopen the Rafah border crossing for the movement of people, though a specific reopening date has not yet been determined.
The move follows recent ceasefire developments that ended two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas, during which all living hostages held by Hamas were released.
Israel had earlier indicated that delays in returning the bodies of deceased hostages could impact the full reopening of crossings and delivery of aid.
COGAT, which manages humanitarian coordination for Gaza, confirmed that aid supplies are continuing to flow through the Kerem Shalom crossing and other designated points along the border.
“It should be emphasized that humanitarian aid will not pass through the Rafah crossing. This was never agreed upon at any stage,” COGAT stated in a message sent to Reuters.
According to diplomatic sources, both Cairo and Tel Aviv are working on technical and security arrangements to ensure that once the crossing reopens, it will operate under coordinated oversight.
The Rafah crossing remains Gaza’s main gateway to Egypt and a critical passage for civilians, medical evacuations, and foreign nationals.
