Iraq signs emergency power deal with Turkey’s Karpowership
Agreement to supply 590 megawatts aims to ease summer electricity crisis
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity has signed a short-term agreement with Turkey’s Karpowership to provide up to 590 megawatts of electricity, in a move designed to ease mounting pressure on the national grid.
The 71-day emergency deal will see two floating power plants deployed at the ports of Khor Al Zubair and Umm Qasr in Basra province, with operations expected to begin in the coming weeks.
Iraq has faced chronic electricity shortages for years, with outdated infrastructure and insufficient generation capacity leaving millions vulnerable to frequent blackouts.
The crisis becomes particularly severe in the summer months, when temperatures exceed 50°C, driving up demand for cooling and straining the grid.
Officials said the latest agreement is part of broader efforts to stabilize supply and avoid widespread outages during peak consumption.
