Iran tops Middle East in reproductive medicine research publications
Country ranks third globally after China and the United States despite limited resources
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iran has secured the top position in West Asia for scientific publications and citations in reproductive medicine, according to the Ministry of Health.
Deputy Health Minister for Research and Technology, Shahin Akhoundzadeh, announced the achievement during the opening of the 26th Royan International Congress and the 24th Royan Festival at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran.
Akhoundzadeh highlighted Iran’s success despite significant financial and political constraints, pointing out that Turkey spends 11 times more on scientific research yet lags behind in reproductive medicine output. He stressed that sanctions have not hindered Iran’s steady progress in this field.
Globally, Iran ranked third in 2024 for published articles in reproductive medicine, following only China and the United States.
The achievement comes despite the country allocating just 0.5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) to science.
In recent years, Iran’s scientific community has seen rapid growth in reproductive biology, with a growing number of studies gaining international recognition.
Akhoundzadeh said the trajectory of development would continue, reinforcing the country’s scientific presence on the global stage.
A five-year review from 2020 to 2024 showed that ten Iranian researchers, alongside ten universities and institutes, were listed among the world’s leading contributors in reproductive biology.
