Iran positioned as ‘golden gateway’ for China–Europe rail transit
Iran has been designated the “golden gateway” for freight movement between China and Europe under a new transit agreement
TEHRAN (MNTV) – Iran has been designated the “golden gateway” for freight movement between China and Europe under a new transit agreement signed by six countries seeking to expand the southern branch of the China–Europe rail corridor, according to Mehr News Agency.
Officials from Iran, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey signed the deal in Istanbul, committing to harmonize tariffs, accelerate train times, reduce customs expenses and improve infrastructure along the route.
Roughly 60 million tons of goods were transported between China and Europe in 2024, and officials say a substantial share is now expected to shift to the southern corridor as the new measures take effect.
Iran’s central geographic position — bridging Central Asia, the Persian Gulf and Turkey — is viewed as critical to strengthening the East–West link. The improved route is intended to complement northern and central corridors and offer shippers a faster, more reliable and cost-effective option.
