Iran bypasses sanctions to add five Boeing 777s to civil aviation fleet
Aircraft believed to be destined for Mahan Air, strengthening long-haul capacity amid tourism push
TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iran has acquired five second-hand Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, marking a significant expansion of its civil aviation capabilities despite ongoing U.S. sanctions, according to reports from Western media outlets.
The wide-body aircraft, previously operated by Singapore Airlines and NokScoot, were reportedly stored in Australia and Cambodia before being transferred through a shell company registered in Madagascar.
Now re-registered under the Madagascar prefix “5R,” the planes represent the first Boeing 777s to join Iran’s commercial fleet.
The jets are widely believed to be headed for Mahan Air, Iran’s largest privately-owned airline, which has operated for years under U.S. sanctions.
Mahan Air continues to maintain routes across Asia, the Gulf, and parts of Europe, and the addition of the long-haul Boeing 777s is expected to significantly enhance the airline’s regional and international reach.
The fleet expansion comes as Iran intensifies efforts to revitalize its tourism sector and improve global connectivity.
With larger aircraft capable of serving distant destinations, the move is seen as a step toward integrating the country more closely with key markets in Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
