‘He is going to be next,’ Trump threatens Colombian president
US President Trump has issued a direct threat to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, warning that he could become the next target of US action
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) – US President Donald Trump has issued a direct threat to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, warning that he could become the next target of US action in Latin America if he fails to “wise up” on drug policy. Trump linked the warning to his broader campaign against Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro.
Calling Petro an “illegal drug dealer,” Trump said, “He’s going to be next. He’s going to be next soon,” claiming Colombia is producing and exporting large quantities of cocaine to the United States.
He accused Petro of being “fairly hostile” to Washington, adding, “So he better wise up.”
Petro has rejected the allegations, saying Colombia has suffered enormously under the US-led drug war and accusing Washington of using narcotics as a pretext to control regional oil reserves.
“Oil is at the heart of the matter,” he said last week, adding that Trump is “not thinking about democratization, let alone narco-trafficking.”
The threat comes amid a major US military buildup in Latin America involving warships, fighter jets and drones targeting what Washington calls “narco-terrorist” networks.
Since September, the US has launched at least 22 strikes on suspected drug vessels, killing 87 people, and recently seized a Venezuelan oil tanker.
These moves have heightened regional tensions and drawn criticism from Petro and several US lawmakers.
