Fighting Terror with Technology: Brampton Mayor Shows How
Mayor Patrick Brown of Brampton has taken a strong stand against terror groups or gangs attempting to establish a foothold in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Context: In mid-2024, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a high-profile Canadian Indian Sikh, was brutally assassinated outside a Sikh temple in British Columbia. This assassination was part of broader attempts to silence political rivals of a foreign government living in Canada and was allegedly carried out by a gang based in India.
Mayor Brown, appalled by the impunity surrounding the crime, called on Prime Minister Carney to designate the India-based gang as a “terrorist group.”
The response from the gang came swiftly. Following his call to the Prime Minister, Brown and his family were placed under police protection due to credible threats to their safety, presumably from the same Indian gang.
However, instead of retreating, Mayor Brown stood his ground. His latest act of defiance, signaling that he will not be intimidated, is the announcement of a state-of-the-art forensic lab that will be built at the former Peel police headquarters, 22 Division.
Work on the lab is set to begin soon.
Brown stated that this lab will be the most sophisticated forensics unit in Canada, equipped to tackle threats from some of the world’s most dangerous organizations.
“The proposed new lab will give us the resources to fight back against the nefarious activities we see every week in the GTA,” said the mayor.
Located at Hurontario Street and Sir Lou Drive, the site is being redeveloped into a modern policing hub. Alongside the lab, new facilities will include a processing area, evidence storage, records management, and upgraded workspaces for staff.
The first phase is expected to be completed by 2028, with the second phase starting the following year and completion targeted around 2033.
For Brampton, the project is more than bricks and mortar – it’s a declaration that the city is prepared to take the fight to international crime, with world-class tools to match.
