Explosion at mosque in Syria’s Homs kills eight, wounds 18
At least eight people were killed and 18 others injured when an explosion hit a mosque in the central Syrian city of Homs during Friday prayers
HOMS, Syria (MNTV) — At least eight people were killed and 18 others injured when an explosion hit a mosque in the central Syrian city of Homs during Friday prayers, according to the Health Ministry.
Najeeb al-Naasan, director of emergency and ambulance services at the ministry, said the death toll remains preliminary and could rise as rescue and medical teams continue their response.
The Interior Ministry said the “terrorist blast” targeted the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque on al-Khodari Street in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood, striking worshippers inside the mosque. Security forces were immediately deployed to the scene and imposed a security cordon around the area.
Authorities said specialized teams have launched an investigation and are collecting evidence to identify those responsible for the attack. No group has claimed responsibility so far.
The incident comes as Syria’s new administration seeks to strengthen security nationwide and pursue what it describes as remnants of the former regime accused of fueling instability.
Former president Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia earlier this year, bringing an end to the Ba’ath Party’s rule that began in 1963. A transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was formed in January.
In a separate statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the bombing, calling it a “cowardly act” and a grave violation of human and moral values.
The ministry said the attack was part of “desperate attempts to destabilize Syria and undermine the resilience of the Syrian people,” stressing that such acts would not derail efforts to combat terrorism, reinforce security, and protect civilians.
Damascus also urged the international community to take a firm stand against terrorism in all its forms.
The statement concluded by offering condolences to the families of the victims, wishing the injured a swift recovery, and reaffirming solidarity with the Syrian people following what it described as a painful tragedy.
