Brunei moving steadily toward goal of planting 500,000 trees by 2035
Official says 186,698 trees planted since launch of Brunei National Climate Change Policy in 2020
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei (MNTV) – The government of Brunei is moving fast towards its target of planting 500,000 trees by 2035, reports Borneo Bulletin.
As of June 14, a total of 186,698 trees had been planted since the launch of the Brunei National Climate Change Policy in 2020, says Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism Abdul Wahab.
He says the ministry, through the Forestry Department, continues to strengthen Brunei’s leadership in sustainable forest management and climate action.
The Forestry Department is also contributing to regional capacity-building, such as the ASEAN Training on Forest Carbon Accounting held in April, supported by the German Agency for International Cooperation under the ASEAN-German Climate Action Programme (GIZ-CAP).
The training included field visits to Badas Peat Swamp Forest, one of the region’s most pristine peatland ecosystems and an important carbon sink.
“We must recognize the economic value of protecting our natural resources. Preserving forests and ecosystems not only strengthens our climate resilience but also creates opportunities for eco-tourism, green jobs, and low-carbon economic diversification,” said Wahab. “This balance allows us to grow in a way that respects our environment and is a strategy we all must strive to adopt to achieve a net-zero emissions future,” he added.
