British Muslims raised millions during Ramadan for Gaza and local aid
Charitable donations during the holy month reflect the enduring generosity of the British Muslim community
LONDON (MNTV) – British Muslims showcased their generosity during Ramadan 2025, raising millions to support charitable causes both locally and globally.
According to Hyphen, a U.K. based news outlet, among the most effective campaigns were those focused on Gaza, which continues to face dire humanitarian challenges.
Muslim Hands, a Nottingham-based aid agency, reported raising £10.4 million during Ramadan, with zakat contributions surpassing £6.5 million.
Zakat, a compulsory form of charity calculated at 2.5% of a Muslim’s wealth, increased this year partly due to the rising price of gold.
This contrasts with sadaqah, voluntary giving in any amount, which saw a decline in both donor numbers and average contributions compared to last year.
While donations were spread across various campaigns, emergency appeals for Palestine remained a key focus.
Since October 2023, the charity has raised over £8.5 million for Gaza, responding to the ongoing Israeli siege and bombardment.
Islamic Relief similarly reported significant contributions for Palestine, directing funds toward essential aid, including food vouchers, iftar meals, medical supplies, and mental health support.
Closer to home, Muslim Aid partnered with the National Zakat Foundation to address financial hardships faced by the U.K. Muslims.
The collaboration distributed £100,000 in zakat funds to individuals and families struggling with inflation and the rising cost of living.
The 27th night of Ramadan marked a historic milestone for Islamic Relief, as a live appeal with the Islam Channel raised £1.5 million for the Children of Gaza campaign—the charity’s highest single-night fundraising total.
Research by Blue State in 2024 estimated that British Muslims donate between £1.48 billion and £2.22 billion annually to charity, with at least £200 million given during Ramadan.
The Muslim Charities Forum highlighted this as a testament to the central role the holy month plays in fostering generosity within the community.
Despite challenges like inflation, the British Muslim community continues to uphold its reputation as one of the most charitable groups in the U.K., addressing global crises while supporting local needs.
