Bomb threat prompts support for Islamic college in Australia
Senator highlights college’s role in promoting understanding, noting its programmes that bring students of different faiths together
BRISBANE, Australia (MNTV) – A bomb threat targeting the Islamic College of Brisbane has drawn strong condemnation, with Australian Senator Paul Scarr calling it a “despicable act” that has left staff, students and families deeply distressed, reports the Indian Sun.
The threat was made on Friday, shaking a community that has long been recognised for its commitment to education and outreach. “I commend the school community for their response. But no school community should have to endure such an event,” Senator Scarr said.
He described hearing about the impact on one family who had fled a war-torn country seeking safety in Australia, only to be confronted with fear again through the incident.
“It is heartbreaking,” he said.
Senator Scarr recalled his first visit to the school shortly after his election in 2019, where students shared their hopes for the future and spoke about how they wanted to contribute to Australia.
Since then, he said, he had attended many events and continued to be impressed by the students’ articulate presentations, the dedication of their teachers and the pride of parents.
He highlighted the college’s role in promoting understanding, noting its programmes that bring students of different faiths together.
“The Islamic College of Brisbane has consistently opened its heart to the broader community,” he said.
“Now is the time for our community to support the Islamic College of Brisbane.”
The senator also linked the threat to the broader work of Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, whose recommendations are expected soon.
“This latest despicable incident underlines the importance of the work of the Special Envoy,” he said.
