Bangladesh launches commercial 5G services in major cities
Nation enters next-generation connectivity to power digital economy and strengthen export industries such as ready-made garments
DHAKA, Bangladesh (MNTV) — Bangladesh has launched fifth-generation mobile services, marking its entry into the next era of digital connectivity as the government looks to expand the country’s technological capacity and boost economic competitiveness.
The commercial rollout, announced Monday, was carried out by the country’s two largest operators, Grameenphone and Robi, with initial coverage in parts of Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet. Officials said the launch represents a significant step in Bangladesh’s national digital strategy, with 5G networks expected to drive innovation, automation, and industrial growth.
Company executives said the first phase would focus on testing network efficiency and assessing demand. While only a small percentage of users currently own 5G-enabled devices, operators plan to expand coverage to every major city by the end of next year. Pricing will remain the same as existing 4G services to encourage adoption.
Government officials present at the inauguration highlighted the potential of 5G to accelerate economic transformation. Analysts say the technology could play a particularly important role in Bangladesh’s ready-made garments sector, which accounts for the bulk of its export earnings.
By enabling real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and connected supply chains, 5G could significantly raise productivity in factories while reducing downtime.
Telecom experts emphasize that 5G supports up to one million device connections per square kilometer — compared with 100,000 under 4G — while providing ultra-low latency of just one millisecond. This capacity is expected to support large-scale automation across industries, improve logistics and transport systems, and strengthen cybersecurity.
Bangladesh has invested heavily in expanding digital infrastructure over the past decade as part of its “Digital Bangladesh” agenda. With the rollout of 5G, officials say the country is positioning itself alongside other Asian economies racing to secure the benefits of next-generation networks for growth and global competitiveness.
