Algeria’s Djaber Bar wins gold, breaks national hammer throw record
Teen athlete secures Algeria’s first title with 67.03-meter throw in Nigeria, setting fourth national record in two months
ABEOKUTA, Nigeria (MNTV) — Algerian hammer thrower Djaber Bar claimed his country’s first gold medal at the 3rd African Combined Athletics Championships (U18/U20), currently underway in the Nigerian city of Abeokuta from July 16 to 20.
Bar, coached by Sadek Dahmane, delivered a standout performance in the men’s hammer throw, registering a remarkable distance of 67.03 meters.
The result not only secured the championship title but also set a new Algerian national record in the discipline. This victory marks Bar’s fourth national record in less than two months.
During a national meet at SATO Stadium on May 31, he made headlines by breaking the national record three times in a single day—achieving throws of 64.32 meters, 65.39 meters, and 66.43 meters in successive attempts.
Bar’s achievement in Nigeria solidified his rapid rise in Algerian athletics and positioned him as a promising talent on the continental stage ahead of future international competitions.
The Algerian contingent has sent around 40 athletes to the Abeokuta championships, competing in various sprint, distance, jump, and throwing events.
Organizers said the event has drawn 500 athletes representing 43 African nations. The tournament is designed to identify emerging talent and prepare the continent’s top young athletes for future appearances at the Olympic Games and World Championships.
