Algeria conducts major live-fire exercise near Moroccan border
Army Chief of Staff supervises tactical drills amid focus on combat readiness
TINDOUF, Algeria (MNTV) – Algerian army units carried out a live-fire tactical exercise, named “Fortress Impregnable 2025,” in the Tindouf region close to the Moroccan border.
The operation involved forces from the operational sector south of Tindouf, supported by various military units and weapons systems.
Lieutenant General Said Chengriha, Chief of Staff of the Algerian Army, supervised the exercise during his visit to the Third Military Region to oversee the combat preparation program for the 2024-2025 training year.
During his visit, Chengriha delivered a speech broadcast across all regional units, emphasizing that tactical exercises serve as a vital indicator of combat experience and personnel proficiency with their equipment and weapons.
He also stressed the importance of aligning efforts, material resources, and human capabilities to protect national sovereignty and maintain the security of the nation and its citizens.
Algeria and Morocco have long been regional rivals, with tensions often centered on the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
Algeria has provided political and military backing to the Polisario Front, which seeks an independent Sahrawi state.
This rivalry has resulted in a frozen conflict, periodic diplomatic disputes, and a closed land border between the two countries since 1994.
The issue remains one of North Africa’s most enduring geopolitical conflicts, with ongoing UN-led efforts to broker a peaceful resolution.
