Afghanistan sends skilled workers to Qatar in job push
Taliban-led government launches program to deploy 2,000 Afghan workers to Qatar, with plans to expand legal migration
KABUL, Afghanistan (MNTV) — The Taliban-led Afghan government has launched a new initiative to send thousands of skilled workers abroad, beginning with 2,000 professionals bound for Qatar.
The move is being presented as a major step toward tackling rising unemployment and offering safe, legal migration opportunities for Afghans.
According to a report by independent broadcaster Ariana News, the program was formally inaugurated this week at a ceremony attended by top Taliban officials.
Abdul Ghani Baradar, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, said the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was prioritizing legal foreign employment as a solution to poverty and joblessness.
“Sending Afghan workers abroad through official channels will not only ease unemployment, but also improve people’s livelihoods, strengthen economic ties, and enhance Afghanistan’s global image,” he said.
Abdul Manan Omari, the Acting Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, echoed this optimism. He noted that illegal migration remains a pressing concern and said similar agreements are being pursued with countries like Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. “If more nations cooperate, we can replace irregular migration with safe and legal pathways,” Omari stated.
The program is also being promoted as a diplomatic milestone. Mohammad Naeem, Deputy Minister for Finance and Administration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said such initiatives represent progress beyond economics. “It is a sign of growing political and cultural relations. Governments are meant to serve their people—policies must be shaped by their needs,” he said.
This marks the first time the Afghan government has formally sent its labor force abroad through structured, legal agreements. Previously, many Afghans have taken dangerous routes or worked in foreign countries without documentation, risking exploitation and deportation.
Taliban authorities say the Qatar deployment is just the beginning of a broader effort to create legal job pipelines that benefit both Afghan workers and the national economy.
