Kurbanov wins Kazakhstan’s first gold at Asian gymnastics championships
Kazakhstan claims seven medals as Kurbanov secures gold in pommel horse at 2025 Asian Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — Olympic silver medalist Nariman Kurbanov has clinched Kazakhstan’s first gold medal at the 2025 Asian Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships, marking a major achievement for the national team during the tournament in South Korea.
According to Kursiv Media, the 27-year-old topped the pommel horse final with a score of 14.933, edging out South Korea’s Hur Woong, who scored 14.633 to take silver.
Vietnam’s Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien secured bronze with 14.233. Kurbanov’s teammate, Ilyas Azizov, also reached the final and placed fifth with a score of 13.933.
The gold medal win adds to Kurbanov’s growing list of achievements, making him a three-time Asian champion (2023, 2024, 2025) and reaffirming his dominance in the event after earning silver at the 2024 Olympics. He has also made multiple podium appearances at World Cup events.
Kazakhstan’s medal run continued in other events as well. Earlier on the same day, Milad Karimi claimed silver in the floor exercise. The national team had already picked up bronze in both the senior and junior team all-around competitions earlier in the week.
Azizov, 25, has also proven to be a strong contender on the international stage. He won the 2024 World Challenge Cup in pommel horse in Osijek, Croatia, and took silver in the floor event.
In the 2023 Asian Championships, he helped Kazakhstan win bronze in the team all-around.
In total, Kazakhstan’s senior and U17 teams earned seven medals during the 2025 championships—three gold, two silver, and two bronze—securing second place in the overall medal standings. Japan dominated the event with seven golds, while South Korea followed in third.
Held from June 5 to 8 in Jecheon, South Korea, the championships featured athletes from 20 countries competing across multiple disciplines in men’s artistic gymnastics.
