Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said reports from affected areas were being reviewed, while Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed there were no fatalities
BALIKESIR, Türkiye (AA) — A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province in western Türkiye late Monday, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said.
The quake occurred at 10:48 p.m. local time (1948GMT) at a depth of about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). It was felt across nearby provinces, including Istanbul.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan extended his well wishes to residents and said AFAD and other agencies were conducting field inspections and closely monitoring the situation.
Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said reports from affected areas were being reviewed, while Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed there were no fatalities.
Yerlikaya said two people suffered minor injuries from panic, while 19 others were later reported injured from falls and panic, according to Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu. Four have since been discharged, and the rest are in stable condition.
Yerlikaya added that crews were restoring power in areas that experienced outages. He noted that three unused buildings and a two-story shop, previously damaged in an earlier quake, had collapsed but caused no injuries.
Authorities continue to assess the impact as aftershocks are monitored.
