US president pledges support for Milei in Argentina’s October elections
U.S. President Donald Trump has endorsed Argentine President Javier Milei ahead of crucial legislative elections
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – U.S. President Donald Trump has endorsed Argentine President Javier Milei ahead of crucial legislative elections set for Oct. 26, where half the Chamber of Deputies and one-third of Senate seats are up for grabs.
“I’m doing something I don’t often do … I’m giving my full endorsement to him,” Trump said during their meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. “The people of Argentina, we’re backing him 100%.”
Trump praised Milei’s economic reforms, saying, “He, like us, inherited a mess and what he’s done to fix it is good. We need to make Argentina Great Again, so it’s an honor for me to endorse it.”
Milei thanked Trump for the support. Asked about possible financial aid, Trump replied: “We’re gonna help them but I don’t think they need a bailout.”
The endorsement comes after Milei’s La Libertad Avanza party suffered a setback in Buenos Aires provincial elections, winning 33.8% against the Peronist opposition’s 47%.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also signaled Washington’s backing on Monday, saying his agency “stands ready” to support Argentina and describing the country as “a systemically important U.S. ally in Latin America” with “all options for stabilization on the table.”
