US faces potential third-longest shutdown in history, warns House speaker
The United States is heading toward “one of the longest government shutdowns” in its history unless Democrats agree to a funding deal
WASHINGTON (MNTV) – The United States is heading toward “one of the longest government shutdowns” in its history unless Democrats agree to a funding deal, House Speaker Mike Johnson warned Monday.
Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill on the 13th day of the shutdown, Johnson accused Democrats of obstructing negotiations, saying their refusal to pass a “clean, no-strings-attached budget” is prolonging the crisis.
“This would be the third longest government shutdown in American history,” Johnson said.
“We’re barreling toward one of the longest shutdowns unless Democrats drop their partisan demands and reopen the government to pay our federal workers.”
He added that Republicans are prepared to negotiate on full-year appropriations and other legislative priorities — but only under transparent conditions.
“We won’t negotiate in smoke-filled back rooms, and we won’t negotiate as hostages,” Johnson said.
The shutdown has already caused widespread disruption, with many federal employees furloughed or forced to work without pay.
Each government agency has activated its own contingency plan to determine which staff are essential.
While shutdowns do not immediately trigger economic collapse, they heighten uncertainty in the world’s largest economy and disrupt vital services across the country.
