TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — UNESCO has added two prominent Iranian figures — philosopher Allameh Muhammad Hossein Tabatabai and mystic Bayazid Bastami — to its list of personalities and anniversaries to be commemorated in 2026–2027, IRNA reported.
The decision was made during UNESCO’s 43rd General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
Tabatabai’s commemoration was backed by Azerbaijan, Iraq, and Pakistan, while Bastami’s was supported by Armenia, Tajikistan, and Turkey.
Tabatabai (1903–1981) was one of Iran’s leading Islamic philosophers, best known for his 27-volume Quranic exegesis Tafsir al-Mizan.
Bastami (804–874 CE) was a renowned early Sufi whose teachings influenced centuries of Islamic mysticism.
Cultural and scientific events will mark both anniversaries at national and international levels.
