UN welcomes US decision to extend Iran ceasefire, urges all parties to support diplomacy
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed Washington's decision to extend its ceasefire with Iran
UNITED NATIONS, New York (MNTV) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed Washington’s decision to extend its ceasefire with Iran, describing the move as an important step toward creating space for diplomacy between the two sides.
“This is an important step toward de-escalation and creating critical space for diplomacy and confidence-building between Iran and the United States,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement, adding that the UN encourages all parties to refrain from actions that could undermine the ceasefire and to engage constructively in negotiations toward a “sustainable and lasting” resolution.
Dujarric said Guterres fully supports Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate continued dialogue and expressed hope that diplomatic engagement would help establish conditions for a “comprehensive and durable resolution” to the conflict.
The statement followed President Donald Trump’s announcement that Washington would extend the ceasefire to give Tehran time to prepare a “unified proposal,” at the request of Pakistani officials.
The truce had been set to expire Wednesday. Trump’s extension came as a U.S. delegation led by Vice President JD Vance was expected Tuesday to travel to Islamabad for a second round of direct talks with Iran, though the trip was delayed.
The initial round of high-level U.S.-Iran engagement in Islamabad — the first direct talks between the two countries since they severed diplomatic ties in 1979 — ended earlier this month without a breakthrough.
