Telephonic conversation between Rubio, Lavrov ahead of Trump-Putin summit
Top diplomats reiterated their commitment to a successful meeting between US and Russian leaders, US state department says
WASHINGTON, USA (MNTV) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone call to prepare for Friday’s summit between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin, the US State Department announced.
State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said both sides “confirmed their commitment to a successful event” during the discussion, which centered on logistical and agenda arrangements for the meeting in Alaska.
Rubio described the planned summit as a “feel-out meeting,” noting that previous phone contacts between the two leaders had not yielded the desired progress. “The president feels like, ‘I’ve got to look at this guy across the table… I need to make an assessment by looking at him,’” he told reporters.
The White House framed the meeting as a “listening exercise” for Trump, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating the goal was to gain “a better understanding of how we can end this war” in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not been invited, with Leavitt emphasizing the sit-down is being held at Putin’s request.
