South Africa reaffirms ICJ case against Israel, urges global action on Gaza
South Africa reaffirmed its commitment to the genocide case it filed against Israel at the International Court of Justice
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (MNTV) — South Africa reaffirmed its commitment Wednesday to the genocide case it filed against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), urging countries to defend international law and help end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Addressing parliament’s committees on foreign affairs and justice, Minister Ronald Lamola said the conflict threatens the post-World War II system of governance.
“International law is under attack,” Lamola said. “The global majority must stand up for the UN Charter and protect the rule of law.”
South Africa lodged its case in December 2023, accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention. Lamola said the move reflects both constitutional values and global obligations, stressing that preventing atrocities requires collective action.
He warned against applying international law selectively, noting it should not target only Africans or nations of the Global South. Lamola also cited coalitions such as the Hague and Madrid groups, which are pushing for a cease-fire and a negotiated peace.
Reiterating support for a two-state solution, Lamola said barriers to that goal must be removed. “South Africa will continue to defend accountability and pursue a just peace,” he said.
