Nearly 89,000 flee Sudan’s El-Fasher amid worsening insecurity
More than 7,000 civilians have fled Sudan’s El-Fasher in recent days, bringing the total number of people displaced to nearly 89,000
KHARTOUM, Sudan (MNTV) — More than 7,000 civilians have fled Sudan’s El-Fasher in recent days, bringing the total number of people displaced from the North Darfur capital to nearly 89,000 since the city’s capture by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) last month, the UN migration agency said Sunday.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), its Displacement Tracking Matrix recorded 7,075 newly displaced people between Nov. 5 and 8 as insecurity worsened following the RSF takeover on Oct. 26.
The displaced have fled to nearby localities including Tawila, Mellit, and Saraf Omra in North Darfur, the agency said, warning that dangerous road conditions are hampering civilian movement.
“The situation remains tense and volatile,” the IOM added.
Local and international organizations have accused the RSF of committing ethnic-based massacres during its assault on El-Fasher, raising fears that the violence could deepen Sudan’s fragmentation.
The RSF seized control of the city after weeks of heavy fighting with the Sudanese army. The conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, has killed thousands and displaced millions, with mediation efforts so far failing to bring an end to the war.
