Mamdani wins key backing from New York governor Hochul
New York Governor Hochul has thrown her support behind Zohran Mamdani, giving the Democratic hopeful for New York City mayor a major boost
NEW YORK CITY (MNTV) — New York Governor Kathy Hochul has thrown her support behind Zohran Mamdani, giving the Democratic hopeful for New York City mayor a major boost from one of the state’s most influential moderates.
In an op-ed published Sunday in The New York Times, Hochul said her endorsement followed “numerous conversations” with Mamdani about housing costs, public transit and other pressing issues.
“I didn’t leave my conversations with Mr. Mamdani aligned with him on every issue,” Hochul wrote.
“But I am confident that he has the courage, urgency and optimism New York City needs to lead it through the challenges of this moment.”
Mamdani, a state assemblymember known for progressive policies, has made affordability the centerpiece of his campaign.
His platform includes free buses, universal child care and a major expansion of affordable housing.
He has also been outspoken against President Donald Trump, criticizing his immigration policies and pushing back against what Mamdani calls xenophobic attacks on his background and views.
Hochul’s endorsement comes as Trump is reportedly considering supporting a centrist contender such as former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Analysts say her backing could help Mamdani broaden his coalition beyond progressives as the primary field takes shape.
