Italy signals move toward recognizing Palestine after Gaza ceasefire deal
Italy is moving closer to recognizing the State of Palestine following the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas
BRUSSELS (AA) – Italy is moving closer to recognizing the State of Palestine following the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Monday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit in Egypt, Meloni said that if the ceasefire plan is fully implemented, “Italy’s recognition of Palestine will certainly be closer,” according to the ANSA news agency.
She said Italy remains committed to supporting the creation of a Palestinian state while maintaining humanitarian assistance for Gaza.
Meloni added that Rome is prepared to play an active role in stabilizing the enclave, including deploying Carabinieri forces if required by a UN resolution.
“Italy is ready to do its part. It’s a great opportunity. It’s a historic day. I’m proud that Italy is here,” she said.
Calling the ceasefire deal “a great success” for US President Donald Trump, Meloni also wished him “more successes, starting with Ukraine.”
The ceasefire plan, first outlined by Trump on Sept. 29, involves three stages: the release of captives and prisoners, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the establishment of a new governing mechanism in Gaza with a multinational peacekeeping force and Hamas’s disarmament.
Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed more than 67,800 Palestinians — most of them women and children — leaving Gaza largely uninhabitable.
