Meloni backs EU sanctions on Israel, calls civilian deaths in Gaza a ‘massacre’
The Italian leader urged Israel to “step out of the trap of war,” stressing that peace cannot be won through military means alone
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni accused Israel of breaching humanitarian law in Gaza, saying its “military campaign” has “exceeded the limits of proportionality” and caused civilian massacres.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Meloni said Israel “has no right to prevent the creation of a Palestinian state, nor to expand settlements in the West Bank to block it.”
She added that Rome would back “some of the sanctions proposed by the European Commission against Israel.”
The Italian leader urged Israel to “step out of the trap of war,” stressing that peace cannot be won through military means alone.
She also underlined that recognition of Palestine must be tied to two conditions: the release of all hostages and the exclusion of Hamas from government roles.
Turning to Ukraine, Meloni accused Russia of “deliberately trampling” the UN Charter by violating another country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
She said Moscow has shown “no willingness” to pursue peace talks and warned the conflict is destabilizing regions beyond Europe.
“The question we must ask ourselves, 80 years after the UN was founded, is: have we succeeded? The answer is clear in today’s news – peace and diplomacy are losing ground, while force is prevailing,” she said.
