India and Nigeria submit bids to host 2030 Commonwealth Games
Nigeria has officially bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja, marking Africa’s first attempt to stage the event
ABUJA, Nigeria (MNTV) — Nigeria has officially bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja, marking Africa’s first attempt to stage the event. India has also submitted a proposal, naming Ahmedabad as its host city.
The Commonwealth Games Federation confirmed both countries met the August deadline for bids. A final decision will be announced in November at the Games’ General Assembly in Glasgow, Scotland.
Durban, South Africa, was previously awarded the 2022 Games but lost hosting rights over financial problems. Winning the 2030 centenary edition would be a landmark for Nigeria and the continent.
“We are delighted to confirm that India and Nigeria have submitted exciting formal proposals to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games,” said federation president Donald Rukare.
The Games will mark 100 years since the first edition, held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. Glasgow will host the 2026 Games after Victoria, Australia, withdrew over costs, while Malta is set to host the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games.
