ICE agents to be deployed at US airports amid TSA funding dispute
Operation to be overseen by border czar Homan as security queues cause widespread travel disruption
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) – U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will be deployed to U.S. airports to help manage crowded security checkpoints, as a funding dispute between Republicans and Democrats leaves Transportation Security Administration staff without authorized pay.
“On Monday, ICE will be going to airports to help our wonderful TSA agents,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that the operation would be overseen by border czar Tom Homan.
Both the TSA and ICE fall under the Department of Homeland Security.
The deployment comes after several attempts to pass a new DHS funding package in the Senate failed to secure a majority, leaving TSA staff without legal authorization for pay since mid-February.
Many officers have taken sick leave as a result, causing long queues at airport security checkpoints and widespread travel disruption across the country.
Both parties have blamed each other for the impasse.
ICE officers have until now been deployed primarily inland to carry out deportations of migrants without residence permits.
At airports, Customs and Border Protection holds primary responsibility for immigration checks, while passenger security screening falls to the TSA.
