Electoral credibility more crucial than winning, says NCP leader Nahid Islam
Nahid pledged the alliance would respect the electoral outcome regardless of results, contingent on fair proceedings
DHAKA (MNTV) – Nahid Islam, the National Citizen Party convener running as a candidate for the Jamaat-led alliance, declared Thursday that conducting credible elections holds greater significance than winning or losing, emphasizing that the true measure lies in citizens’ ability to vote freely.
After casting his ballot at AKM Rahmatullah College in Badda within the Dhaka-11 constituency, Nahid told reporters that electoral credibility must be preserved at all costs.
“If the election is not fair, the July movement will be rendered meaningless,” he cautioned.
Despite expressing confidence about his coalition’s prospects for forming the next government, Nahid explained that the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance had come together with the specific goal of securing power.
“We believe this alliance is standing at the threshold of forming the government.”
He pledged the alliance would respect the electoral outcome regardless of results, contingent on fair proceedings.
“We are prepared to accept the people’s verdict. If the election is free and fair, we will accept whatever result comes.”
Nahid also appealed to the civil administration, police forces and military to commit fully to guaranteeing electoral fairness.
Addressing the current electoral climate, he recognized existing difficulties but said the Jamaat-led coalition seeks maximum voter participation to enable unimpeded voting.
He additionally encouraged voters to support the ‘Yes’ position in the referendum.
“There are obstacles, and some are trying to undermine the electoral atmosphere. It is not enough for you or me to say the election was fair. Public reactions on social media and the opinions of election observers will determine whether the polls were transparent.”
Polling commenced at 7:30am Thursday across more than 42,000 voting centers nationwide in 299 constituencies.
The 13th national parliamentary election is proceeding with approximately 130 million registered voters, whose choices will shape Bangladesh’s next government.
