Egypt, Somalia discuss troop deployment and regional cooperation
Talks at Aswan Forum highlight Egypt’s planned troop contribution to AU mission and commitment to Horn of Africa stability
ASWAN, Egypt (MNTV) — Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with his Somali counterpart Abdusalam Abdi Ali to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and advancing plans for the deployment of Egyptian troops to the African Union’s Support and Stability Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the fifth Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, where regional leaders and international partners gathered to address peacebuilding and security in Africa.
According to a statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty welcomed progress on the troop deployment and reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting stability in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa.
He urged that deployment procedures be completed promptly and emphasized the importance of securing sustainable international funding to ensure the mission’s long-term effectiveness.
Abdelatty also underscored Egypt’s continued support for strengthening Somali state institutions and advancing efforts toward national security and unity.
He stressed the need to intensify cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism, describing them as the foremost threats to regional peace and development.
On the economic front, Abdelatty highlighted the growing momentum in bilateral relations and expressed Egypt’s readiness to host the second Egypt-Somalia Business Forum soon. The forum aims to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, health, security, and diplomacy while fostering private-sector partnerships.
Somali Foreign Minister Abdusalam Abdi Ali expressed appreciation for Egypt’s longstanding support in political, security, and development spheres. He reaffirmed Somalia’s desire to strengthen its partnership with Cairo to advance mutual interests and regional stability.
Both sides agreed to enhance coordination in regional and international forums to address shared challenges and promote collective security across the Horn of Africa, the ministry’s statement added.
