Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson described one of the leaders of the extremist Oath Keepers organization implicated in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot as “a devout Christian.”
It’s highly unlikely Carlson would have offered a similar defense for a Muslim American.
Since Sept. 11, 2001, Muslim Americans have experienced growing discrimination and hate crimes while their religion has been demonized.
During the first year of former President Donald Trump’s administration, nearly half of Muslim Americans polled said they had personally experienced some type of discrimination.
Muslim American communities remain under intensive, often unconstitutional, surveillance.
By contrast during the past two decades, the U.S. Department of Justice has largely disregarded violent white supremacists.
That’s despite FBI statistics showing how white supremacists were responsible for more terrorist attacks on U.S. soil than any other group.
