DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) — A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday, killing at least five people—including three in the capital, Dhaka—and injuring roughly 100 others, authorities said. The tremor also caused structural damage, with cracks appearing in several buildings and panic sending residents fleeing into the streets.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the quake, which lasted only a few seconds, struck at 10:38 a.m. local time (0438 GMT) with an epicenter in Narsingdi district, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of Dhaka.
A five-story building’s railing collapsed in Dhaka’s Bangshal neighborhood, killing three people, local police officer Ashish Bose told Anadolu. Victims also included a child, and injured people included Dhaka University students and factory workers in the central districts of Gazipur and Narsingdi.
Muhammad Yunus, interim head of the government’s disaster management office, said authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have launched efforts to assess the full extent of the damage. He expressed deep shock and sorrow at the casualties.
The local fire department reported at least seven buildings in and around Dhaka were damaged, and one person was injured while evacuating from a compromised structure.
The quake’s impact was also felt across parts of neighboring India, though no casualties have been reported there.
